Abstract

The article analyzes New Year greetings as a political discourse genre and describes the structural and linguistic peculiarities of the texts of the New Year addresses of the heads of Germany and Ukraine. The notion of genre is specified and different genre classifications of political texts are considered. The materials for research in the context of this paper are the 2020 New Year greetings of the President of Ukraine and the Chancellor of Germany. Owing to the fact that the text of the President’s New Year greetings is part of political communication rituals, its form is more significant that its informativeness. The article draws attention to the fact that New Year addresses are to conform to a certain structure. Despite the presence of common communication units, the structures of Ms Merkel’s and Mr Zelensky’s New Year addresses have their own peculiarities. It was found out in the course of the analysis that Ms Merkel’s New Year greetings had more clearly defined parts dealing with the results of the outgoing year and plans for the future whereas it was rather difficult to single out such units in Mr Zelensky’s speech as his address had a philosophical bias. The wording of New Year addresses is much determined by the systems of values. Ms Merkel begins her greetings with such a historic event, significant for the country, as the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall fall. The important themes touched upon in her address are social life, climate changes, the welfare of all European countries. Mr Zelensky, in his turn, focuses on national identity, sovereignty and peace. Unlike the President of Ukraine, the Chancellor, in her New Year address to the German people used the pronoun “I” more often whereas Mr. Zelensky repeatedly used the lexeme “united”, thus stressing the importance of the idea of the consolidation of the people and the authorities. The absence of interrogative sentences and the prevalence of compound and complex sentences are characteristic of Ms Merkel’s New Year speech. The predominance of interrogative sentences in Mr Zelensky’s speech, the number of which made up 60 per cent of the total amount, changed the conventional format of the President’s speech completely. The analysis which was performed showed that with the aim of effective influence upon the audience Ms Merkel and Mr Zelensky, in their New Year addresses, made use of different lexical and grammatical means.
