GENRE MODIFICATIONS OF THE MODERN NOVEL (ON THE EXAMPLE OF O. SLONYOVSKA'S NOVEL-TETRAHEDRON)

Abstract

Modern author's experiments with the genre form of the novel show flexibility, variability of the genre, the ability to transform. An example of the general trend of genre evolution is Olga Slonivska’s experimental tetrahedron novel, where each of the four parts, united by an idea, time and characters, forms an autonomous whole and at the same time becomes an integral part of the system. The texts can be read in any order of the parts, which distinguishes the tetrahedron novel from the tetralogy. O. Slonivska reproduces the same event in diametrically opposed focuses. The key situations that connect the characters are revealed in the vision of each character, which gives the reader the opportunity to collect a full three-dimensional picture only after reading all the parts. Each of the novels of the tetrahedron is marked by processes of genre diffusion. In general, the tetrahedron coexists with an autobiographical, intellectual novel (“Medusa-Gorgon”), a diary (“Locust Instinct”), a mystical thriller (“Neglected by Noah”), a socio-psychological novel, a family chronicle, a melodrama (“Lost in Time”). In all four novels, the story is told in the first person, the main characters are each time a new psychotype, a certain character, portrayed in detail by the author (teacher, journalist, doctor, writer). In addition to the interpenetration of genres, the novel is characterized by autobiography, immersion in the psychology of creativity, intertextual inclusions, collage and multilevel. The writer managed to give the modern novel a specificity due to unique artistic techniques (play with the reader, openness of the ending, internal and intertextual dialogues, the use of temporal shifts and a combination of conscious and unconscious, real and mystical). Thus, O. Slonivska in her novel-tetrahedron conducted a literary experiment with form, demonstrated the ability to mix stylistic dominants of prose, poetry and drama, to work in several stylistic manners (modernism, postmodernism, metamodernism). The presented genre modifications of the novel confirmed the idea of the most common approach to innovation in the era – the destruction of boundaries between genres.
