Abstract

The historical past of Zaporozhye Cossacks was and remains the main source in the study of history, culture, traditions, language of the Ukrainian people. Archival sources help linguists explore the lexical component of past centuries. Focus on the peculiarities of use, education and semantic motivation of common and proper names. Ukrainian anthroponymics set a goal to disclose the ways and means of education of the names of a person.

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the thematic group of names of Zaporozhye Cossacks, formed from ornithological names. Scientists call these surnames ornithological names.

The source of the research is “Archive of Kosh of the New Zaporozhye Sich”. The names studied include: Vorona, Golub, Derkach, Kryachok, Kuluk, Kulukivskiy, Leleka, Orlov, Piven’, Pivnenko, Sunuc’kuy, Such, Soroka, Sorochuns’kuy, Teterya, Chaika, Chaikivs’kuy, Shpak.

These names are derived from the names of birds. The semantic meaning of these names is revealed in the Dictionary of the Ukrainian language. The etymology of the names of birds originates in the Proto-Slavonic period. Surname Vorona descended from the Proto-Slavonic word *vornъ  ʽravenʼpredatory bird with black and gray feathers. Surname Golub descended from the Proto-Slavonic word *golǫbь  ʽblueʼ–  the bird has a blue color. Surname Derkach descended from the word ʽderkatuʼ. By this principle, the surname is formed Kryachok the bird screams out specific sounds *-ra-, *-rę-. Surnames Kuluk, Kulukivskiy are educated from the Proto-Slavonic word *kulіkъ, which was formed from the word *kul- (*kаul-) and means ʽbone, legʼ. Given name Leleka is derived from the name of the bird ʽstorkʼ. Lexeme ʽlelekaʼ is borrowed from the Turkic languages läiläk, leijäk, leklek, läjlek. The surname Orlov is formed from the Proto-Slavic *орьлъ – large bird of prey high flying. Surnames Piven’, Pivnenko are educated from the Proto-Slavonic word *рĕti – ʽsingʼ. Surname Sunuc’kuy descended from the Proto-Slavonic word *sinjь – ʽgray-hairedʼ. The name Such descended from the Proto-Slavonic word *sytʼь, formed from Proto-Slavonic word *syčěti – ʽsow, hissʼ. Surname Soroka and Sorochuns’kuy come from the Proto- Slavonic words *sorka and *svorka –ʽmake a sound, squeakʼ. Research surname Teterya descended from the Proto-Slavonic word *tetervъ and means ʽa pheasantʼ. Formed the name of the interjection *ter- – scream of a bird. Surnames Chaika, Chaikivs’kuy are derived from Proto-Slavonic word *čajьka which is *čaja. Which that too are formations from the scream of a bird. Surname Shpak descended from the Proto-Slavonic word *ščьpakь, which is the generator of the word *ščipati and means teasing.

After analyzing your own names, there is reason to believe that the Cossacks were given the names of the birds for the similarity of their character, behavior, skills, habits. They are formed from ornithological names of the Proto- Slavonic origin. Further research on the anthroponomy of the past will help to uncover the history of the lexical composition of the Ukrainian language.
