Abstract

The article deals with the interpretation of the concepts “teacher” and “student” in Ukrainian society and their linguistic realization in the texts of student press.

The aim of the study is to explore the features of the representation of the concepts “teacher” and “student” in modern language consciousness of students. The material for analysis is students’ texts of online magazine “Education and ...”.

Students in their texts model the image of an ideal teacher using a number of words of different parts of speech, among which  adjectives and verbs are the most frequent. Nouns are used less frequently. The most spread characteristics of teacher is the word ideal, expressing students’ dreams, and the word fair. Such adjectives as modern, wise, intelligent, demanding, humane, rigorous are also actively used for the description of teacher. Generally, all the adjectives are positively marked.

Among the verbal characteristics of the image of teacher the most represented are: he loves his job, loves and understands children and is able to interest them. They prove that students first of all appreciate the indifferent attitude to them.

According to language assessment of teacher, his (her) comprehensive description is the following: this is a person with positive traits who works by vocation, strives to constantly improve his or her professional and human qualities, which are relevant in today’s information society.

The semantics of the word student in the texts of the magazine is represented by several major associations: “student is modern”, “student and work”, “student and learning”, “student and science”, “student and business”, “student and finance.”

Analyzing the language we have got the image of a modern student – on the one hand, a confident, self-sufficient individual who is able to combine study with work in order to be independent financially and to gain practical experience; on the other hand – a passive person, who is not interested in learning and can not defend himself.

Thus, studying the semantic features of the words teacher and student the conclusions are the following: modern teacher must be perfect, follow ancestral human values; while modern student, according to the view of students, is primarily to be able to adapt to life and meet the demands of society. Unfortunately, there is not the idea about the importance of human values as a part of the concept “student” in the analyzed texts.
